Destination GuidesRyokan vs Luxury Hotel in Kyoto and Hakone: How to Choose and Combine
16 five-star stays2 destinationsEditor's guide
Hakone is Japan's classic hot-spring retreat, a volcanic mountain landscape within easy reach of Tokyo by direct train from Shinjuku. Luxury here means a ryokan or resort with private open-air baths, multi-course kaiseki dinners and, on clear days, views of Mount Fuji across Lake Ashi. It does slow, restorative mountain luxury better than almost anywhere in Japan.
