Golf for two:
ocean holes, sunset tables
Clifftop and seaside courses, a short round you can both enjoy, and dinners worth dressing up for.
For a golf trip as a couple, choose courses with sea views, at least one round that works for mixed abilities, and dinners worth staying up for. Bali has the most romantic setting: New Kuta Golf's clifftop back nine runs above the Indian Ocean, and Bukit Pandawa's all-par-3 course takes about two hours, followed by a sunset at Uluwatu. Phuket pairs Jack Nicklaus's seaside Mission Hills with dinner at PRU, the island's MICHELIN-starred restaurant. Da Nang offers oceanfront links at Hoiana Shores and the Norman Course, a MICHELIN-starred dinner at La Maison 1888, and lantern-lit evenings in Hoi An. Most five-star resorts in all three have spas; check each hotel's page.
What makes a great golf escape for couples?
The best couples' trips aren't about playing 36 holes a day. Look for scenery you'll both remember, at least one shorter or more forgiving round if your handicaps differ, and a base where a spa afternoon or a beach is never far away. Bali, Phuket and Da Nang all deliver, with oceanfront holes, sunset viewpoints and some of Southeast Asia's best restaurants close to the courses.
Keep the rhythm simple: golf in the morning, a long lunch, the spa or the pool in the afternoon, and a reservation somewhere special at sunset.
Bali: clifftop golf and Uluwatu sunsets
On the Bukit Peninsula, New Kuta Golf is billed as Indonesia's first links-style course. Its back nine runs along limestone cliffs above the Indian Ocean, and it hosted the 2009 Indonesia Open. Nearby, Bukit Pandawa Golf & Country Club is an 18-hole, par-54 course made up entirely of par 3s on the Kutuh cliffs, with ocean views from most holes. A round takes about two hours, so it's ideal when one partner plays more than the other. Up in the cool central highlands, Handara, Bali's first course, sits inside an extinct volcanic caldera.
Some of Bali's older big-name resort courses have closed, so stick to the courses listed here, which are open to visitors, and confirm tee times in advance.
For evenings, catch the Kecak fire dance at sunset at Uluwatu Temple, have a drink at Single Fin above the Suluban surf break, or grill seafood on the sand at Menega Cafe in Jimbaran. Dine under glass domes at Koral, the aquarium restaurant at The Apurva Kempinski. For a once-in-a-trip dinner, book Locavore NXT near Ubud, ranked on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants.
Phuket: seaside Nicklaus and a MICHELIN-starred dinner
Mission Hills Phuket is the island's only Jack Nicklaus design and its only seaside course, with several holes running along the northeast shoreline. Laguna Golf Phuket, inside the Laguna resort at Bang Tao, is a relaxed lagoon-side round, and Blue Canyon and Red Mountain offer more of a challenge.
Book PRU at Trisara, Phuket's MICHELIN-starred farm-to-table restaurant, for your big night. Jampa, with a MICHELIN Green Star, is near Mission Hills. Watch the sunset together from Promthep Cape, or take a boat among the limestone islands of Phang Nga Bay from Ao Po Grand Marina, near Mission Hills. Phuket is driest from November to April.
Da Nang: oceanfront links and lantern-lit Hoi An
Hoiana Shores, Robert Trent Jones Jr.'s oceanfront links south of Hoi An, was named World's Best New Golf Course at the 2020 World Golf Awards, and red lanterns inspired by Hoi An's Old Town mark its holes. Greg Norman's Norman Course at Legend Da Nang plays across seaside dunes with views of the Marble Mountains. Its sister Nicklaus Course is floodlit, which makes a twilight round for two easy.
For dinner, La Maison 1888 at the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort is central Vietnam's only MICHELIN-starred restaurant (currently operating from the resort's Club Lounge). Nén Danang, Vietnam's first MICHELIN Green Star, serves a seasonal set menu. After dark, walk the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An Ancient Town. Da Nang is best from February to May.
Which couples' golf escape is right for you?
- Bali — the most dramatic clifftop scenery, a two-hour par-3 round that suits mixed abilities, and a strong dining and wellness culture. The dry season runs from April to October.
- Phuket — the easiest logistics, a choice of four strong courses and a MICHELIN-starred dinner. Go from November to April.
- Da Nang — award-winning oceanfront links, night golf and the romance of Hoi An. Visit from February to May.
The seasons complement each other: Bali's dry months line up with the northern summer, and Phuket and Da Nang shine in the northern winter and spring.
Tips for a golf trip as a couple
- Mix the formats. Pair a full championship round with a shorter one, such as Bukit Pandawa's par 3s or a twilight nine under the lights in Da Nang.
- Choose your tees. Each player should play the tees that suit their game; it keeps the pace relaxed and the round fun.
- Book spa time after golf, not before; most five-star resorts have spas, but check treatment availability on the hotel page.
- Reserve sunset tables early, particularly clifftop and beachfront spots in high season.
- Confirm tee times and dress codes directly with each club before you travel.
⛳ The courses worth the trip
Golf season: The dry season from April to October brings the most reliable golf weather on the Bukit Peninsula, with lower humidity and steady trade winds; Handara in the central highlands sits above 1,100 m and stays markedly cooler year-round. November to April is the best time to play Phuket, when the northeast monsoon brings dry, sunny days, calmer seas and lower humidity. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings frequent afternoon downpours, so early tee times work best in those months. February to May is the sweet spot: the central coast is dry, sea breezes keep mornings comfortable and the links-style courses play firm and fast. June to August is still dry but hot, while September to December brings the rainy and typhoon season.

❓ Golf trip FAQ
Which Asian golf destination is most romantic for couples?
Bali has the most dramatic setting, with New Kuta Golf's clifftop back nine above the Indian Ocean and sunsets at Uluwatu Temple. Da Nang pairs oceanfront links with lantern-lit evenings in Hoi An, and Phuket combines a seaside Nicklaus course with a MICHELIN-starred dinner at PRU. Choose based on the season you are traveling.
What if my partner is a beginner or plays less often?
Pick at least one shorter or more forgiving round. Bali's Bukit Pandawa is an 18-hole, par-54 course of par 3s that takes about two hours, and Da Nang's floodlit Nicklaus Course allows a relaxed twilight round. Playing from the tees that suit each player keeps the pace easy, and resort courses such as Laguna Golf Phuket are welcoming.
Are Bali's golf courses open?
The courses in this feature, New Kuta Golf, Bukit Pandawa and Handara, are open to visitors with tee-time bookings. Some of Bali's older, well-known resort courses have closed, so don't rely on older guidebooks. Confirm current opening, tee times and rules directly with each club before you travel.
Which restaurants are best for a special dinner?
In Bali, book Locavore NXT near Ubud, ranked on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants, or Koral's aquarium dining room in Nusa Dua. In Phuket, PRU holds the island's MICHELIN star. In Da Nang, La Maison 1888 is central Vietnam's only MICHELIN-starred restaurant, and Nén Danang holds a MICHELIN Green Star. Reserve well ahead.
Do the golf resorts have spas?
Most five-star resorts in Bali, Phuket and Da Nang have a spa, and spa culture is a big part of travel in all three. Treatments, couples' suites and opening hours vary by property, so check each hotel's page and book treatments in advance, ideally for the afternoon after your round.
When should couples plan a golf trip to Bali, Phuket or Da Nang?
Bali's most reliable golf weather is in the dry season, from April to October. Phuket is driest from November to April, when seas are calmer. Da Nang is best from February to May. Its rainy and typhoon season runs from September to December. Combine two destinations in their overlapping good months for a longer escape.
